Safe and Secure Baby Court
Safe and Secure Baby Court (SSBC) is a vital program within the Rhode Island Family Court system, dedicated to supporting families facing challenges in providing safe and nurturing environments for their infants. Established by Chief Judge Michael Forte in 2017, SSBC operates as a specialized calendar that offers intensive support and services to parents of newborns up to eighteen months old.
Our Focus
At SSBC, we recognize the critical importance of the early months and years of a child’s life. Our mission is to intervene early and provide families with the tools and support they need to break cycles of adversity and promote healthy development. We understand that many parents may face various challenges, including previous involvement in the juvenile system, mental health issues, housing insecurity, and lack of parenting skills. SSBC is here to provide a compassionate and non-judgmental space where families can access resources and assistance tailored to their unique circumstances.
Our Approach
SSBC operates on a multidisciplinary model, bringing together judicial officers, social workers, attorneys, healthcare professionals, and community organizations to collaborate in supporting families. We work closely with each family to develop personalized case plans that address their specific needs and priorities. Through frequent court sessions, families receive ongoing support, guidance, and encouragement as they navigate their journey towards creating stable and loving homes for their children.
Our Impact
Since its inception, SSBC has made significant strides in empowering families and promoting positive outcomes. By providing intensive support during the crucial early years of a child’s life, SSBC has helped families overcome challenges, strengthen bonds, and build brighter futures. Through education and advocacy efforts, we aim to raise awareness about the importance of early intervention and support for vulnerable families in our community.
